Tonight we are going to the Science Center and sleep over there.  It is going to be awesome!  We did our book reports on science fiction.  The choices were a hanging mobile, a clay model, or a written book report.  We read a book called Aladdin.  It was not like the movie at all.

Today we went to the Disneynature movie called "African Cats."  I learned that Cheetas can run faster than I thought they could.  I'm happy because it is getting close to the end of school.

This week we are learning about poetry.  We went to see Disney's "African Cats."  I learned that lions like to travel in prides and cheetas travel alone.  Another thing I learned is that if a lion gets hurt sometimes the pride has to leave the lion.  In math we learned about liters, pints, cups, half gallons, and gallons.  Next week we are going to the Science Center.  We got to make encouragement cards for our classmates.  That was really fun!

In writers workshop we're learning about how to make good stories.  In math we just took a big test.  We have been studying for a science test over fossils, different kinds of rocks, and minerals.  A week ago we did a living biographies that you can listen to. We are voice threading those now.  They will be posted next week.

We had an unusual week this week.  We had two days off - Tuesday and Wednesday because of ice and snow.  Many went sledding and played out in the snow.  Some of us even had sleepovers and did not want to come back to school.  On Friday we had volcano eruption day.  See our fun video!  We also had Super Bowl Dress Day on Friday.  We didn't have to wear our uniforms!  Yea!  We are still learning about Pompeii and what happened to all the people that lived there.

We are reading the book Socks it is about a cat who got adopted by a family and they go on vacation.  When they get back they have a baby.  We are getting read to write our own stories.  When we are done we get to publish them and have our own book.We are getting ready to read about Pompeii and Friday, February 4th is volcano eruption day for third grade!  I can't wait!

Non-Fiction Stories

We have been reading non-fiction stories this week.  That is stories that are real.  Last week we read about the Titanic.  It was really interesting!  We learned that the Titanic was called the "Rich Man's Special."  It sank in 1912.  After the Titanic hit the iceberg five of the watertight compartments flooded.  If only four would have flooded then the ship would not have sank.  There were 2,227 passengers and only 705 were rescued by the ship Carpathia.  It was really sad.    About 73 years later a scientist by the name of Robert Ballard found the Titanic again.

This week we read a story called Patrick and the Great Molasses Explosion.  In 1919 in the city of Boston the Purity Distilling Company's huge tank that held molasses exploded.  People and horses were covered with molasses.  The city was a sticky mess.  When Patrick went home his mom didn't believe his story until his dad came home covered in molasses too!
